I Bought a $2,000 iPhone Duo. Here Is Why I Bought AppleCare+ With It

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999, and replacing its folding screen costs $999 without coverage. Here is the repair math that made AppleCare+ an easy call for me.

I did not agonize over AppleCare+ for my iPhone Duo. I added it at checkout, because I did the math first, and the math was not close.

The Duo starts at $1,999. That is already a lot to spend on a phone. What really got my attention was the repair bill. Apple estimates that replacing the inner folding display without AppleCare+ costs $999. That is exactly half the starting price of the phone itself. The worst case category, which Apple calls "other damage," costs up to $1,499, or about 75 percent of the base phone.

I am not buying a phone I am afraid to use. I unfold this thing every day, I carry it everywhere, and I know myself well enough to know I am not going to baby it forever. A $99 safety net felt a lot better than gambling on a $999 screen.

This is not a normal iPhone repair story. My Duo has two displays (a 5.4 inch outer display and a 7.6 inch inner folding display), a hinge, and a replaceable cover layer over the folding screen. More moving parts and more specialized parts mean more expensive fixes. For me, the real question was never whether I could afford the phone. It was whether I could afford to fix it.

What it costs to repair, with and without coverage

These are Apple's US estimates for service from Apple. Fees may be subject to tax, the final fee is set after Apple inspects the device, and Apple Authorized Service Providers can set their own out of warranty prices.

Note on combined damage: Apple lists outer display and back glass together at $509 without coverage. With AppleCare+, Apple charges service fees by damage category (for example, $29 for screen or back glass damage and $99 for other accidental damage), so confirm the exact fee for a combined repair when you book it. The worst case accidental damage fee with coverage is $99.

The standard one year Apple Limited Warranty covers manufacturing issues, not accidental damage or batteries that wear down from normal use. Drop it, crack it, spill on it, or wear the battery down, and I would be paying out of pocket without coverage.

The cover layer is one of the reasons I felt better about this purchase. The Duo's inner screen has a top layer that Apple says can be replaced on its own. If only that layer is scratched or worn, the fix is $49 without coverage or $19 with coverage, a small fraction of the $999 inner display fee. That matters on a foldable, because the folding surface is exactly the part most likely to show wear over time.

What I paid for AppleCare+, and what it covers

I went with AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss for the Duo. Apple's pricing is:

  • $19.99 per month, billed until cancelled
  • $199.99 per year
  • $399 as a one time payment

Paying yearly saves money over monthly: 12 months at $19.99 is $239.88, compared with $199.99 for a year. Two years at the yearly rate is $399.98, basically the same as the $399 upfront option.

With the plan, I get unlimited repairs for accidental damage such as drops and spills, battery replacement at no extra charge when capacity drops below 80 percent, 24/7 priority support, and Express Replacement Service, which means Apple can send a replacement before I send mine back. Theft and loss coverage is for up to two claims every 12 months, and Find My has to stay switched on, which mine is.

If you already cover other Apple products, it is also worth checking AppleCare One Individual. Apple says it costs the same $19.99 per month as the Duo plan and provides the same benefits as AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss, while extending coverage to two more devices.

How I thought about the math

I will be honest: AppleCare+ is insurance. If I never damage this phone, I will have paid about $400 for two years of peace of mind and gotten nothing back except support and battery coverage. I am okay with that trade, because the downside without coverage is so much worse.

Here is the math, using the yearly plan rate:

  • One inner display crack, year one: $199.99 for the plan plus $99 for the repair is $298.99. Without coverage, the repair alone is $999. That saves $700.01.
  • One inner display crack, over two years: $399.98 for two years of coverage plus $99 for the repair is $498.98. Without coverage, the repair alone is $999. That saves $500.02, and I would still have coverage left.
  • One outer display crack, year one: $199.99 plus $29 is $228.99, compared with $379 without coverage. That saves $150.01.
  • Worst case "other damage," over two years: $399.98 plus $99 is $498.98, compared with up to $1,499 without coverage. That saves $1,000.02.
  • Two inner display cracks, over two years: $399.98 plus $198 in service fees is $597.98, compared with $1,998 for two unprotected repairs. That saves $1,400.02.
  • Theft or loss, over two years: $399.98 plus a $149 replacement fee is $548.98, compared with paying full replacement cost for a $1,999 phone without theft and loss coverage.

I also looked at the case where AppleCare+ does not win on paper. If I buy two full years upfront and only ever crack the outer screen once, my total spend ($428.98) is higher than the $379 repair alone. I paid extra for protection I barely used. But that is the wrong way for me to judge insurance on a first generation foldable. I am not buying it for the most likely repair. I am buying it to cap the worst one.

One inner screen repair saves $900 on the repair fee alone, which is more than four years of AppleCare+ billed yearly. On a $2,000 phone, that asymmetry is the whole story for me.

Why I would not skip it on this phone

On a cheaper phone, I have skipped AppleCare+ before and been fine. On the Duo, I could not talk myself into it, for five reasons.

1. The repair is a huge share of the phone's price. A $999 inner display is 50 percent of the base price. A $1,499 other damage repair is 75 percent. On most iPhones, a screen repair is annoying. On the Duo, it is a financial event.

2. This is first generation hardware. The Duo is Apple's first foldable iPhone, with a hinge and a folding OLED that no previous iPhone had. First generation designs are where unknown wear patterns show up, and where genuine parts and trained repair options matter most. I do not want to be the test case for a third party foldable screen repair.

3. The part I use most is the part that costs most. The inner display is the reason I bought a Duo. It is also the largest, most exposed, and most expensive part to replace. The phone's main selling point and its main repair risk are the same component.

4. The plan turns a shock bill into a known fee. Without coverage, I would be gambling between $0 and $1,499 every time I carry the phone. With coverage, accidental damage is $29 for outer display or back glass, $99 for inner display or other damage, and $19 for the cover layer. That predictability matters a lot more when the unprotected numbers are this high.

5. Theft and loss protection matters more at $2,000. Losing a $1,999 phone without theft coverage means buying another one. With the Theft and Loss plan, a replacement costs $149 per claim (up to two claims every 12 months). I carry this phone every day, so that alone helped justify the plan for me.

There is also a practical benefit that does not show up in the table: Express Replacement and priority support. My phone is my main phone, so getting a replacement quickly matters almost as much as the repair price.

Who might reasonably skip it

I am not saying everyone has to buy it, even on the Duo. You might reasonably skip it if:

  • You almost never drop or damage phones, you always use a case, and you are comfortable self insuring a $999 repair.
  • You plan to upgrade within a year and would rather risk one year of exposure than pay for two.
  • You already have carrier insurance or another policy that covers the Duo for less, with comparable service fees and genuine parts. Compare the deductible and claim limits before assuming it is better.
  • You are buying the Duo as a secondary device that mostly stays at home.

I am none of those people with this phone. It is my daily phone, I use the folding screen constantly, and I did not want a $999 repair hanging over every drop.

My bottom line

I think of my Duo's real price as $1,999 plus protection, not $1,999 alone. With two years of AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss at the yearly rate, that is $2,398.98 before any service fees. With monthly billing for two years, it is $2,478.76 before fees.

That is a lot, and I know it. But the alternative was carrying a first generation foldable with a $999 screen and a $1,499 worst case repair, and hoping nothing goes wrong.

For me, the decision was simple: buy AppleCare+ at checkout, keep Find My on, put the phone in a case, and treat the $99 inner display fee as the price of actually using a $2,000 foldable without worrying every time I unfold it.
